New Moody Cabin Exterior

This project has officially taken over a year. Up here in Pinetop, all this kind of exterior work has to be done in the Summer/early Fall around the snowfall. Unfortunately we missed the boat last Summer so here we are a year later and with 20% more expensive materials. But hey, at least it got done and we are SO thrilled with the outcome!

Project Background:

Some of our siding needed redoing because of snow buildup/wear-and-tear, and lots of paint areas were chipping (our house is 16 years old and never been painted on the exterior or had siding fixed). Plus, the colors were blah and I’m loving the dark, moody cabin vibe right now.

It also gave us the opportunity to do a few more things to the exterior…like switch out the light fixtures, add a dog door and fenced-in area for them, and paint the doors black like I’ve always wanted to!

Danny and I both love the dark, moody vibe. We found a couple of cabin color combos that we loved while golfing, and took a drive around the country club up here to find some more inspo.

Choosing the Colors:

I narrowed down some good combos with Photoshop. We liked dark gray siding with dark brown trim the best.

Then I found a BUNCH of popular paint colors within those parameters, and painted samples on all sides of the house to see them in every light. This is super important, because the colors will look so different in every light. We found that a lot of the gray on the front looked blue or purple, but they looked fine in the back. We also found one that looked totally green in the back and brown in the front.

We narrowed down the trim color first because we had to choose a Trex-like product called NewTech Wood for some of our new accent siding, so we were able to color match it to paint the trim the same color. I also made sure to put up the paint samples against the new accent siding/trim color to see how they look with it.

This is the NewTech Wood product we used, in the color “Brazilian Ipe”.

We ended up going with Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze for the main siding, and a color match for the trim to match our Brazilian Ipe accent siding. For doors, we chose Benjamin Moore in Black Magic.

Lighting/Fence/Dog Door

This project gave us the opportunity to switch up some of the exterior as well. We swapped our lighting, patio furniture, and we added a (paintable!) dog door and fence so the pups can go potty when we aren’t home.

Next, I want to put a maple tree in front of our house where the big boulder is! We don’t have enough maples up here, and I love the colors in the fall.
