Sedona Weekend Itinerary

Being born and raised in Arizona, I had surprisingly only been to Sedona a few times in my childhood. However I’ve really been loving exploring that part of the state the past 5-ish years! From its hiking and scenery, to adventure and activity…there is so much to soak in! Here’s a little run-down of a good, well-rounded Sedona itinerary with its surrounding areas.

Where to stay:

  • L’Auberge: Definitely on the expensive side but take a look at their website and you will see why!
  • Wyndham Sedona: Breathtaking views of the red rocks
  • Airbnb: There are the cutest quaint cottages in Sedona as well as large excluded cabins. Get $30 off your first Airbnb with this link!
  • Camping: Experience the beauty of Sedona firsthand! This is what we typically do. Check out the campgrounds here, or there are tons of dispersed camping options if you’re down to get rugged. The photo below is of a dispersed campsite we found and we try to go back once a year!

Leisurely activities:

  • Tlaquepaque arts and shopping village: very unique Southwestern and Native American art shops plus a few good restaurants.
  • Shopping downtown: more inexpensive art shops and restaurants than Tlaquepaque, and worth walking around for an afternoon after lunch.
  • Vortexes: I have never personally experienced these but have always wanted to! The red rocks are a very sacred and spiritual place, and there are allegedly spots in Sedona called “vortexes” where you can go and feel the presence and energy. Learn more about them here, and find a map of them here.
  • Chapel of the Holy Cross: A great place to watch the sunset! There is a vortex here as well.
  • Golf! Sedona has some of the best views on the golf courses in the country. Seven Canyons Golf Club is one of the best.

Adventurous activities:

Hiking:

  • West Fork Trail: A long, leisurely stroll along Oak Creek through the canyon – amazing scenery and some interesting historical sites along the way! Bring water shoes as you will cross the creek a dozen times or more.
  • Devil’s Bridge: Be prepared, it’s a steep hike! But so worth it. There are two ways to do it – you can take a serious off-road vehicle straight to the main trailhead, or add a couple easy flat miles to your hike and enjoy the scenery. You can also walk along the off-road trail but it’s dusty and crowded.
  • Cathedral Rock: A short but steep hike! You can also explore around at the top. Apparently there is a vortex here.

What to Eat:

Breakfast:

Lunch:

Dinner:

  • Elote Cafe: An upscale Southwestern take on Mexican food. They have a great patio with beautiful views and live music!
  • Mariposa: Upscale seafood and steakhouse, has a great wine selection and even better views. I would definitely make a reservation for this one.
  • Dahl and Di Luca: Upscale Italian, great seafood!

Wineries:

It’s no Napa, but we have wine too! Most of the best grapes are grown in the Wilcox and Page Springs areas and use the Page Spring to irrigate their vineyards. You can also take a kayak winery tour through all the wineries along the creek!

  • Page Springs Cellars: We are members here and love it! In my opinion it’s the best Arizona wine from Arizona grapes. The estate is right on the creek and very relaxing, they also offer massages and yoga and have a great restaurant on site. You can also take tours and book private lunches in the vineyard by the creek.
  • Dancing Apache: Love their wine! They buy California grapes and mix with Arizona grapes. Their site is amazing, they do weddings and you can rent out the lodge for the week as well. They do tastings only once or twice a week, so plan accordingly. They sometimes offer private tastings, so just ask!
  • Chateau Tumbleweed: A little hole in the wall winery on your way to Jerome worth checking out. Their wines are also made by the same winemaker as Dancing Apache.
  • Alcantara Vineyard: More exotic wines and they buy grapes from all over. Not my absolute fave wines but the site and vineyards are gorgeous!

Just outside Sedona:

If you hit the wineries, it’s worth taking some trips to these awesome places!

West of the I-17:

  • Jerome: The original mining town of Arizona (once the richest town in the country!) and is now a ghost town. There is tons of history to learn here, check out the Douglas Mansion and the mine shaft right next to it (2x the depth of the Empire State Building!)
  • Tuzigoot National Monument
