The Custom Wedding Dress Process

I am obsessed with my dressmaker!!!! Angela Kim Couture literally went INTO my brain and designed exactly what I was thinking. My dress fit like a glove AND I didn’t have to pay for alterations. She truly knows a woman’s body and how to flatter it. I loved her so much I even had her do my rehearsal outfit!

The dress was the thing I was the most nervous about, because I don’t really fit into typical bridal samples at the store. I tried on an amazing Galia Lahav dress at Destiny’s Bride in Scottsdale that I fell in love with, but they couldn’t accommodate some of my custom requests like sheer sleeves, body coloring, and train length.

So I took my design to Anomalie, an inexpensive online custom wedding dress service, but they were unable to accommodate the specific lace and mesh (it’s called power mesh – my final dress was actually made with the same power mesh that Marchesa uses!). The power mesh has a spandex-like quality which I loooved because I felt like I was wearing Spanx.

Angela is based out of Asheville, NC so I had to go there three times throughout the process, and then she met me in Atlanta to deliver the final product to me. It worked out great for a few reasons: Danny’s best friend and his husband had just moved to Asheville so we got to visit them for the first time, it’s the sour beer capital of the USA and we looove beer, Danny’s brother and sister-in-law live in Atlanta which is only 3 hours away, and I work for a company out of Atlanta so I was able to pair it with some meetings! It was like the stars aligned 🙂

The first visit, we discussed my vision. She already knew the basics and I had already asked her via email if she could accommodate the specific materials I was looking for, so she brought samples for me to choose from. Then we emailed back and forth for some further details.

The second visit, I got to try on the shell of my dress (just a mockup) so she could perfect the shape and fit. We also got started on the rehearsal outfit.

The third visit, she had the whole dress and rehearsal outfit ready for me! She wanted me to go home home with them, but because I was working with my naturopath on some hormone issues I had lost 20 lbs and 12 inches. Whoops. So I dropped my mom’s veil off for her to reconstruct and we decided to meet in Atlanta for the final of final fittings.

The final thing!

I forgot to wear my veil 🙁 but some day, we are going to do a photoshoot with it!
